As far as analog synthesizers go, the KORG MS-20 holds a special place in the hearts of many musicians and synth enthusiasts. Making its debut in 1978, this semi-modular monophonic synthesizer quickly became a staple for its unique sound, flexibility, and reliability.

In this article, we take a quick look at its history, and milestones in innovation. We also shine the spotlight on several artists who helped popularize this iconic synthesizer.

At the bottom of the article, we’ve also left a link to a free pack of MS-20 Mini samples you can download!

Key Takeaways

  • The KORG MS-20 is a legendary semi-modular analog synthesizer first introduced in 1978
  • In 2013, KORG recreated the classic synth in a compact and affordable form, dubbed the MS-20 Mini
  • Both the original MS-20 and its Mini version feature the beloved, distinctive sound that has been used by numerous artists throughout the years, thanks to its reproduction of the original circuitry

The Legacy Of The KORG MS-20 (& Its Siblings)

It’s hard to dive deep into the MS-20 without at least giving a brief mention to the rest of its ‘MS’ family.

Here’s an overview of the key models in the MS series:

  1. Korg MS-10 (1978): A monophonic analog synthesizer with a compact design and a versatile sound engine.
  2. Korg MS-20: (1978) A semi-modular monophonic synthesizer known for its patchable signal path, self-oscillating filters, and distinctive sound.
  3. Korg MS-50 (1979), the MS-50 is a semi-modular synthesizer that offers more extensive patching capabilities and a broader sonic palette compared to the MS-20.
  4. Korg MS-20 Mini (2013): A faithful reproduction of the original MS-20 in a smaller form factor, retaining the classic sound and patching capabilities of its predecessor.

KORG MS-20: Milestones & Innovations

The MS-20 was one of the first synthesizers to offer a high-pass and low-pass filter in combination. Push the resonance to the extreme upper limits and it would self-oscillate, furthering the creation of unique and expressive sounds that were not commonly found in other synthesizers of its time.

In addition, the MS-20’s external signal processor (ESP) section was a pioneering feature, allowing external audio signals to be processed and manipulated using the synthesizer’s filters and envelope generators. This feature was innovative for its time and opened up new creative possibilities for sound shaping and manipulation. The inclusion of the ESP demonstrated Korg’s commitment to expanding the functionality of the MS-20 beyond traditional synthesis, making it a pioneering instrument in terms of its signal-processing capabilities.

Its semi-modular design allows for patching and customizable routing of the signal path. While definitely not the first of its kind, the MS-20 did play a crucial role in helping to popularize and refine the semi-modular concept, much like its predecessors, such as the ARP 2600 and EMS VCS3.

The Birth Of The KORG MS-20 Mini

Although the MS-20 was discontinued in 1983, its sound and legacy continued to inspire artists and engineers. In 2013, KORG resurrected the legendary MS-20 as the MS-20 Mini. The MS-20 Mini is a faithful recreation of the original MS-20, featuring (mostly) the same analog circuitry and sound as its predecessor.

The most notable difference is that the MS-20 Mini uses the filter from the earlier prototypes of the original MS-20. Make no mistake, though, these first-gen filters are often regarded to be superior (though is largely down to the ears of the beholder).

At 86% of the original size, the Mini offers a more portable and accessible option for musicians and producers. Modern additions to the updated MS-20 Mini include a MIDI In and USB port, allowing for easier integration into modern studios and setups.

During the development of the MS-20 Mini, KORG’s engineers closely worked with the original MS-20 designers to ensure the Mini would be a perfect continuation of the MS-20 legacy. The birth of the MS-20 Mini marked a new era for KORG, once again solidifying its place as a key player in synthesizer history.

KORG MS-20 & MS-20 Mini: Who Uses It?

Throughout their history, both the KORG MS-20 and MS-20 Mini have been embraced by numerous famous artists across different genres. Some notable musicians who have utilized these iconic synthesizers include:

  • Aphex Twin: Known for his experimental electronic music, Aphex Twin has extensively used the MS-20 in his work.
  • Daft Punk: The French electronic duo has incorporated the MS-20 in producing several of their hit tracks.
  • The Prodigy: This British electronic music group is another iconic user of the MS-20, adding it to their signature aggressive and powerful sound.

In addition to these artists, countless other musicians and producers have found their voice through the unique sound capabilities of the KORG MS-20 and MS-20 Mini.
