Own a pair of AirPods but struggling to get them loud enough? You’re not alone.

I assume you’ve already “tried turning the volume dial up”, and still disappointed with the overall volume level.

This guide lays out a series of steps and actions you can take to get that volume dial cranked.

Be careful to not damage your hearing, though!

How To Make Your AirPods Louder

1. Check The Settings In Your Music App

While you can adjust the volume during playback in your music apps when listening to music, there are ways of adjusting AirPods volume with a few simple taps.

For example, Spotify has a quick trick that can automatically increase the loudness of your music.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Spotify app and select the settings ‘cog’ icon in the top right-hand corner.
  2. Scroll down and hit ‘Playback’
  3. Scroll to ‘Volume Level’ and hit ‘Loud’

Doing this will increase the loudness of the music you are listening to, but keep in mind that this may distort the overall sound.

Another way to increase the volume is to enter Spotify’s equalizer and select the ‘Loudness’ preset. To do this, follow the instructions below:

  1. Open the Spotify app and select the settings ‘cog’ icon in the top right-hand corner.
  2. Scroll down and hit ‘Playback’
  3. Scroll to and select ‘Equalizer’
  4. Scroll down to the ‘Loudness’ preset and select it.

Doing this will add an equalizer setting that will make your track seem louder than it did previously. You can also tweak your EQ settings if something doesn’t feel quite right.

A similar process can be carried out using the Apple Music app. Just follow these steps:

  1. Enter your iPhone ‘Settings’ app
  2. Scroll to the Music app
  3. Select the EQ menu
  4. Select the ‘Loudness’ preset

If you’re wondering how to increase AirPod volume, this should help your music or podcast appear louder than before.

2. Turn Off “Low Power Mode”

If your iPhone is in low power mode, you’ll be conserving vital battery power, which can affect the overall volume of your music playback.

So if you need to make your AirPods or AirPods Pro louder, make sure to disable low power mode by doing the following:

  1. Select the ‘Settings’ app
  2. Scroll down to ‘Battery’
  3. On the next screen, you can toggle low power mode on or off

Keep in mind that if you are low on battery, this may significantly reduce the time before needing to charge again.

3. Check The Volume Of Your Earbuds

It is possible that one AirPod could be louder or quieter than the other, which will be off-putting when listening to music. Think of this like an AirPods volume control.

You can make a quick check on this by following these instructions:

  1. Tap on the ‘Settings’ app
  2. Click on ‘Accessibility’
  3. Tap on ‘Hearing’ followed by ‘Audio/Visual’
  4. Check that the slider is located in the middle. If it’s over to one side, the levels on your AirPods won’t be balanced

4. Perform A Reset

If all else fails, then try resetting your AirPods. This involves a few quick and easy steps that will disconnect your AirPods from your device and restore them to a normal functioning volume.

Here is how to make AirPods louder by resetting your earbuds:

  1. Open the lid of the charging case and make sure the AirPods are inserted
  2. Open the ‘Settings’ app and scroll to ‘Bluetooth’
  3. Find the Airpods in the menu, tap the small ‘i’ next to their name and select ‘Forget This Device’
  4. Hit ‘Confirm’ to ensure the AirPods are fully disconnected from the device
  5. Now with the AirPods in the case, hold down the Setup button for 15 seconds, and you’ll notice the LED start to flash amber
  6. This marks a full reset. Now try reconnecting your AirPods to your device and check to see if the volume issues are rectified

5. Clean Your AirPods

Knowing how to increase AirPod volume doesn’t necessarily mean anything particularly technical. In fact, it could just be a case of giving them a clean!

AirPods, and all earbuds and headphones, will naturally build up dirt and grime throughout their lifespan, so giving them a clean can free up any nasty clogs that could be blocking volume.

Grab some cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol and gently clean around the AirPods, taking care not to damage any components or force any dirt into small crevices.

You can also pick up Isopropyl alcohol wipes to do the trick. Apple recommends 75% alcohol or higher.

6. Carry Out An Ear Tip Test

Apple AirPods Pro is improving when it comes to noise canceling properties.

Most AirPods Pro will come with a variation of ear tips which you can test to ensure you are wearing the most suitable pair and therefore rejecting the most exterior noise.

Doing this is quick and easy and could solve your volume issues if you wear incorrect tips. Remember this will only work with a Pro set.

Just follow these instructions to carry out an ear tip test:

  1. Hit the ‘Settings’ app followed by ‘Bluetooth’
  2. On the list of devices, select ‘AirPods Pro’
  3. Select ‘Ear Tip Fit Test’ then ‘Continue’
  4. Place AirPods in both ears and hit ‘Play’
  5. If you are prompted with a message saying ‘Good Fit’ then you know you have the correct tips in
  6. If one or both AirPods say ‘Adjust’ then try changing the silicone tip and then run the test again

7. Contact Customer Care

If all else fails, contact Apple customer care or visit an Apple Store. If you’re AirPods are covered under warranty and are suffering a mechanical fault, you may be eligible for a replacement.

If not, the Apple team will still be able to take a look at diagnosing the issue and solve the problem from there.
